Dairy producers will often times use bedding on their drylots during moisture events to increase cow comfort and minimize pooling of moisture and creation mud in the dirt pens. Different types of bedding is used, but straw and sawdust or wood chips are the most common. When woodchips are used, they are often times harrowed back into the pen surface, rather than removed, providing a carbon source to the top layer of the pen. We looked at the ammonia emissions from pens with harrowed in woodchips and ones harrowed without woodchips to see if their was any ammonia reduction with the wood.
