Stockpiling of manure is a common method of manure storage at feedlots. Stockpiles are made in pens as a method of manure management while cattle are in the pens, and stockpiles are made in holding areas outside of the pens as a method of temporary manure storage. In-pen stockpiles are dynamically agitated on a consistent basis by cattle, while out-of-pen stockpiles are left static. We looked at the ammonia emissions from the two piles to see if dynamic or static piles had greater ammonia emissions.
